Obituary of Edwin Selden Smith
Pomfret Center - Edwin Selden Smith, 89, died at the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester on Tuesday August 4, 2009. Born on December 14, 1919 and raised in the Yalesville section of Wallingford (where he was known as Selden), he was son of the late Otis S. and Ethel May Smith. He was predeceased by sister, Norma E. Smith and first wife, Lois Clark Smith. A graduate of Trinity College in Hartford Connecticut, Ed was a plastic development engineer at Rogers Corporation in Rogers, Connecticut and held patents in the field.
He is survived by his wife, Rosina Heckendorf Smith, three children, Alice Naqvi Mugler and husband Rick Mugler of Palo Alto, California, Edwin S. Smith, Jr. and wife Cathy Smith of Edwards, Colorado, and Marjorie L. Smith and partner Walter Wanagel of Lisbon, Connecticut as well as their children Jack, Jasmin, Jeff, Kelly, Suzie, Sarah and Chris and seven great grandchildren. In addition he is survived by step-children, Dana Heckendorf and wife Trudy, Amos Heckendorf and wife Christine, and Mike Heckendorf and partner Carolyn Wagner as well as step grandchildren, Bob, Dana Lee, Christian, Elissa, William and Bryan and two stepgreat grandchildren. He was proud of the entire family.
He was known for his dry sense of humor and puns, love of singing, exploring country back roads, and being the best packer ever, a skill which he passed on to his children. He was very active in the First Baptist Church of Willimantic and served on statewide American Baptist committees including the board of the Pierce Memorial Baptist Home. He was most recently a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Brooklyn, Ed's faith guided his actions in life and he lived his convictions every day.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. John Lutheran Church, 445 Providence Road (Route 6), Brooklyn, Connecticut on Saturday, August 8th at 11:00 AM.
