Obituary of Gertrude Mary Emmitt

Gertrude Mary Emmitt of Seeley Brown Village, Pomfret, CT, passed away August 29, 2011 at the age of 100 after a short illness. She was born May 19, 1911 in West Haven, CT to Charles and "Lilli" Lewis. She was preceded in death in 2007 by her husband, Rev. George Emmitt, and her five brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her two children, Judith DiMaria (husband Bruce) of Killingly, CT and G. David Emmitt (wife Karen) of Charlottesville, VA, her five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A celebration of her long, happy, and caring life took place in May of this year and consisted of several events including her 100th birthday party, which was attended by family members from various parts of the country as well as Canada. The celebration was the perfect opportunity for others to let her know the impacts she had on their lives. The family wishes to thank those who gave her care over the last several years. While she lived on her own at Seely-Brown Village (Pomfret Center, CT) up until the past few days, those from the Day Kimball HomeMakers were instrumental to her feeling of "still making it on her own" at 100. Her family wants to recognize the staff and residents of Seely-Brown that made life in the slow lane quite enjoyable with little stress. She would also want those from the Church of the Nazarene in Danielson to know that she never felt forgotten. And not lastly, her children want to thank those at Day Kimball Hospital, especially those in Cardiac Intensive Care and Hospice Care. Gertrude will be remembered for her persistent smile, laugh, and zest for life. As a minister's wife, she devoted most of her life to caring about others. As a mother, she was always there to love, console, and encourage. As an individual, she was an enthusiastic and inspiring artist, painting her last picture at the age of 100 and submitting it to the Woodstock Fair where her art won several blue ribbons over the years. She was an active member of the Church of the Nazarene. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on Friday, September 2, 2011 at the Church of the Nazarene, 440 Westcott Road, Danielson followed by a Funeral Service at 10:30 AM. Interment following at 3:00 PM in the Northford Cemetery, Northford, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Nazarene Missionary Society, Church of the Nazarene, 440 Westcott Road, Danielson, CT 06239.
