Obituary of Hazel F. Sheldon
Hazel F. Sheldon, 94, of Woodstock, CT died Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at Day Kimball Hospital. She was born in Pomfret, CT on July 31, 1917, daughter of the late John and Hazel (Dickey) Currier. She was the wife of Wayland N. Sheldon, Sr. They were blissfully married for 62 years when he passed on January 12, 1996.
Hazel helped start the first nursery school program in Woodstock in 1945. She spent many years as a housekeeper for many families of Woodstock Hill and beyond. Hazel also worked for the W.T. Grant Co. in Putnam for 17 years.She was very active for many years with the Woodstock Volunteer Fire Association working countless hours at the food booth at the fair and other various events. She led a home economics group for area women to learn crafts, cooking and sewing. She loved attending the Woodstock Sr. Center for crafts. She was best known for her fabulous cooking, generous heart and loving her family. She leaves behind 3 brothers: Frank Currier of Pomfret, Thomas Currier of Putnam and Robert Currier of Florida. Eight siblings pre-deceased her.
Hazel leaves behind four children, Wayland Jr. and wife Nancy Sheldon of Woodstock, Ronald and wife Dianne Sheldon of Pomfret, Susan and husband Eric Fallenius of Woodstock and Deborah Pratt of Woodstock. She also leaves behind 23 grandchildren, 51 great grandchildren and 17 great great grandchildren. Her stepson Richard Sheldon, granddaughter Cindy Whitehouse, great granddaughter Ashley Sheldon and great great grandson Hayden Young pre-deceased her.
Calling hours will be on Friday, October 28, 2011 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Smith and Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, CT. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Christ Episcopal Church, 521 Pomfret Street, Pomfret, CT. A light luncheon will be held directly after the services in the church hall. Burial will be later in the day for the immediate family at Quassett Cemetery in Woodstock.
