Obituary of Charles D. Chambers
DAYVILLE- Charles Douglas Chambers, 91, passed away quietly at the Matulaitis Nursing Home, Putnam, Connecticut on February 19, 2012 after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Margaret "Dooley" (Redmond) Chambers. Doug, as he was known to his family, was born in Aldershot, Hampshire, England on May 18, 1920 and served with the Royal Air Force in Iraq during World War II. He met the love of his life, Dooley Redmond while on a mission to retrieve a downed British war plane in Gorey, County Wexford, Ireland. He proposed to her within a few days of their meeting and they were married shortly after in 1944. They emigrated from Britain to Canada where Doug served in the Canadian Royal Air Force from 1947 to 1951 and then immigrated to the United States in 1955. Doug and Dooley's love and devotion for one another endured throughout all of the years of their marriage. They were married for 63 years at the time of her death in 2007. Doug was an avid golfer and scored a hole in one at the age of 75. He was also a self published author; writing about his experiences as an immigrant, a book of poems dedicated to his loving wife and a philosophical treatise on God and religion. He also loved to play poker and rarely lost during friendly games with his friends and neighbors. He was a deep thinker and a true philosopher and enjoyed long discussions on a variety of subjects including religion, politics and current events. Doug and Dooley were predeceased by their son James Douglas Chambers, their son Shaunn David Chambers, their son Robert Michael Chambers and their daughter Margaret "Red" Chambers. He is survived by his son Terence P. Chambers and his wife Jan of Dayville, Connecticut, and their son Terence C. Chambers, his daughter Alanna Goldberg and her husband Josiah Goldberg and their son Hunter Goldberg of Roseburg, Oregon. In addition, he leaves many close friends and relations in his much-loved Ireland. The family would like to extent their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all of his kind and loving neighbors of Dayville who took such good care of him and to the sensitive and caring staff of Matulaitis Nursing Home in Putnam who made his passage comfortable and peaceful. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations for the research, prevention and cure of Autism.
