Obituary of Emma Lou Smith

EMMA LOU GRIESEMER SMITH DECEMBER 1, 1916 - JULY 20, 2013 Emma Lou Smith, 96, of Woodstock, Connecticut, went home to be with the Lord on July 20, after a very brief illness. She was the only child of her loving parents, Gertrude May and Doctor Lloyd Philip Griesemer. She was born and grew up in the Pimlico area of Baltimore, Maryland, where her parents owned a neighborhood pharmacy. She retained close ties with her extensive family in Reading, Pennsylvania where she spent many happy times. After high school Emma attended The Philadelphia School of the Bible for two years, where she met and married Wilbur H. Smith who was employed there. They returned to Baltimore in 1940, living first in Pimlico, then Reisterstown, and finally Laurel, Maryland. In 1985 they moved to Woodstock, Connecticut to be close to their daughter and her family. Emma lost her beloved husband Wilbur in 1985. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Don Everburg of Woodstock, Connecticut, and her son and daughter-in-law Raymond and Karen Smith of North Carolina. She has eight grandchildren, Robin Everburg, Sherry Everburg, Adam Smith, Adrienne Devlin, Martha Limberick, Joanna Cronkhite, Deborah Smith, and Holly Smith. She is also blessed with eight great grandchildren, Rory Smith, Margaret Devlin, Mark Devlin, Gage Simmons, Zachary Cronkhite, Calder Cronkhite, Audrey Helmetag, and Erika Helmetag. Services will be held at the graveside in the Elmvale Cemetery in Woodstock at eleven AM on Thursday, July 25. Friends and family are invited back to the home of Ruth and Don at 269 Child Hill Road in Woodstock to share food and friendship immediately after the service. Emma requested that in lieu of flowers, donations might be made to Operation Smile which provides corrective surgery to children in need.
