Obituary of Herbert M. Turnbull

Herbert M. Turnbull, Jr. 88, of Woodstock Meadows, Woodstock, CT, died Wednesday June 27, 2007 at the Westview Health Center in Dayville. He was born April 5, 1919 in Cambridge, MA, son of the late Herbert M. and Mabel F. (Copp) Turnbull. He has made his home in the Putnam area since 1950. He was the husband of Margaret (Fallon) Turnbull. His family was an old New England family being an 11th generation descendant of Edward Fuller of the Mayflower. He was employed by Union Engravers of Putnam and later was the Business Manager and Assistant Treasurer of the Rectory School in Pomfret. He was an Army Veteran of World War Il and served overseas for 27 months. He was assigned to General Omar Bradley's 12th Army Group Headquarters, serving in campaigns in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the American Theater Campaign Ribbon. The European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with three bronze stars, after returning home he served in the US Army Reserves and was discharged in 1952 with the rank of Master Sergeant. He was active in Masonic orders being a Past Master of Quinebaug Lodge 106, AF & AM in Putnam. A dual member of the Cornerstone - Quinebaug Lodge #122 in Thompson and Putnam Lodge # 46 in Woodstock, a member of Connecticut Consistory, a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Sphinx Temple of Shriners. Herbert was a Past President of Sphinx Moslem Shrine Club. Also a member of Albert J.Breault Post #1523, VFW, in Putnam. Benson - Flugel Post #111 American Legion in Woodstock, the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, and the New England Historical and Genealogical Society. He leaves in addition to his wife Margaret; a sister: Virginia Rafter of Boca Raton, Florida; a niece: Jean Sullivan of Houston, Texas, a nephew: Dr. Peter Roundy of Boca Raton, Florida. Predeceased by a sister: Nathalie E. Stanley of Bell, Florida. A calling hour will be held August 19th (Sunday) from 11:00 AM to 12 Noon at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home 148 Grove Street, Putnam followed by a Memorial Service at 12 Noon. Burial in Elmvale Cemetery Woodstock.
