Obituary of Albert H. Buell
Albert H. Buell, 91, of Eastford, CT died Friday, April 10, 2009 at the Haven Health Care in Danielson. He was the husband of the late Diantha (Brown) Buell; she died August 7, 1999. He was born May 19, 1917 in Eastford, son of the late Charles and Mildred (Goodhall) Buell.
He was a graduate of Putnam High School and a 1935 graduate of the Putnam Trade School. He was a lifelong resident of Eastford, a member of the Congregational Church of Eastford serving as a Deacon, trustee, on the building committee and many other committees and boards. Albert owned and operated Buell's Greenhouses in Eastford for over 60 years and was a charter member of the American Gloxinia and Gesneriad Society. He had his own strain of Hybrid Gloxinias he developed. He was a member of the African Violet Society of America and held the office of Commercial Chairman for over 25 years. Albert traveled and lectured across the United States and Canada and wrote several publications on growing gloxinias. He was a past member of the Gideon's Northeast Camp, and the Wolf Den Grange in Abington. During World War Two he was employed at Tatem Manufacturing in Eastford, and was very instrumental in keeping production up during the war. He was a member of the East Woodstock Coronet Band playing the trumpet and the Babcock Band in Ashford. He built the Bandstand for the East Woodstock Coronet band with salvaged lumber from the hurricane.
He leaves his children: Dottie Torcellini and her husband Hank of Eastford; John Buell and his wife Keri of Woodstock; Charles A. Buell and his companion Julie of Seattle, WA; a sister Beatrice Buell of Brooklyn; grandchildren: Paul, Rob, Julia, Klee, Lena, Liam, Eamon, Tom, Lisa; seven great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife Gertrude (Eller) Buell; his brothers C. Franklin Buell, Sr.; Robert Buell, Sr.
Funeral services are Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Congregational Church of Eastford, 8 Church Road, Eastford, CT, 06242. Calling Hours Friday, April 24, 2009 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam. Burial in Grove Cemetery, Eastford.
