Obituary of Paul W. Smutnick

Paul W. Smutnick, 83, of Putnam, formerly of Abington passed away March 20, 2009 at the Day Kimball Hospital. Born January 11, 1926 in Millville, NJ, son of the late John and Emma Smutnick, he was predeceased by his wife Gloria Simonzi Smutnick in 1995. He was a US Navy Veteran of WW II. Paul was employed as a dispatcher for the Connecticut State Police "Troop D" for 31 years, where he helped to start the Downstairs Athletic Club. He also worked for the Town of Pomfret where he drove a school bus for 44 years. He also helped to start the Saturday Youth Frog Rock Basketball League. Paul was named Pomfret Lion of the Year in 1985. He leaves behind his children and their spouses, Mary Lou Thomas and her husband Bob of Pomfret Center; Paul J. and his wife Sandra of South Windsor; William and his wife Cherie of Pomfret Center, his brother-law-law John Simonzi and his wife Millie, of Middlefield, Ct, sister-in-law Lucille Smutnick of Pomfret Center, his grandchildren Jason, Tricia, Lee, Noah, Abigail and Ahlanya, his "Girl" friends from Wednesday afternoon Bingo, as well as his companion of 14 years Oreo, several nieces and nephews. Paul was predeceased by his brother John Smutnick, his sister Dorothy Robbins and his second wife Edna Osborn. The funeral will be Tuesday at 10:30 am from the Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove Street, Putnam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in St. Mary Church of the Visitation, 218 Providence Street, Putnam. A Calling hour will be Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Burial in Abington Cemetery.
